How to check WhatsApp without updating the "last seen" time
WhatsApp is great, in that it tells you when the message has been sent (1 tick), it tells you when the message has been received at the recipient's device (2 ticks), and it also tells you when that person was last online "last seen" time.
Does 2 ticks mean my message has been seen?
No. When you see 2 ticks next to a message it simply means that the message has been received to that recipient's mobile or tablet device. It does not mean that they've read the message. Please do not start chasing people just because a message has 2 ticks and they haven't replied!
At least wait until the "last seen" time has changed to be after that message was received on their mobile or tablet device!
How can I read a message on WhatsApp without updating my "last seen" time?
Well that's a bit sneaky of you... But it is possible!
If you're using an iPhone or an iPad (basically get WhatsApp from the Apple store) then apparently there's a setting for this - I don't have any iOS devices and so don't know for sure, but I've heard it been said.
But either way, a way to hide your "last seen" time is to turn off your Internet connection.
The only way that WhatsApp knows what time you were last online is for your mobile phone or tablet device to send this information to the WhatsApp server using an Internet connection (whether it's 3G, wi-fi, or any other Internet connection).
If you turn off all your Internet connectivity (wi-fi and packet data), and then read your message, then there's no way for your mobile phone or tablet device to send the "last seen" time to the server, and therefore your "last seen" time wil not update.
Obviously the next time you go on WhatsApp with Internet connectivity enabled then your "last seen" time will update though, but it means you can read a message and not reply straight away if you wanted.
Personally I think this is a bit mean, but it's up to you I guess...!
